To move the Chautauqua would be the final nail in its coffin. If it is moved off the square and to the park, that would spell the end for sure. The number of people attending would drop off to a point of not even attempting to have it again.
Having it on the square provides a location where most in town can park close or walk from their homes. It’s a three-day event that brings people to enjoy the town square and the stores around it. It already has problems competing with two other towns with their town events each year. Maysville has their Fall Festival at the same time as well as Princeton has their days also the same weekend. If The Chautauqua was moved up by one week I believe turn out by people and vendors would be increased by a greater number.
More than likely this will be my last Chautauqua, if I make it that far in the year. I know my concerns and voice probably doesn’t count much for I’m a dying man. But if they would look at these things and the people as a town would take a look at it, I believe all will see that it is the truth and it can be successful and grow once again.
Chautauqua used to be great; as a kid it was great to have two flea markets a year – one in spring in May and then the Chautauqua in the fall. People use to come from Kansas City and further off to come to both of them. We had pride in the flea markets and the town.
Well, I just wanted to give my opinion on what can and should be done to save the Chautauqua and give it growth when it is well needed.
Thank you,
Kenny King, Gallatin
