Participants in North Central Missouri College’s Upward Bound program recently participated in the Missouri Stream Team initiative.
NCMC Upward Bound members, who are high school students from Gallatin, Galt, Chillicothe, Hamilton, Jamesport, and Trenton, conduct several community service activities including Adopt-A-Highway, Health Fairs, and Missouri Stream Team, among others, as a part of their UB experience.
Stream Team is an adoption program for Missouri streams and rivers sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Volunteers adopt a site and participate in activities that beautify and improve the habitat by picking up litter, planting trees, monitoring water quality, etc. NCMC’s UB students were assisted in this project by Jane Cotton and Greg Pitchford, employees of the Department of Conservation, who provided information about caring for water channels, mapping of water sources, and improving water system quality. The UB students adopted the Thompson River, and this picture was taken at the Mockingbird Access on the Thompson just west of Trenton.
