Maria Burge wins medalist award
Gallatin Lady Bulldog golfers clipped Maysville by 4 strokes on Tuesday to win the annual Gallatin Invitational Golf Tournament held at Daviess County Country Club. So far this season, the Lady Bulldogs have not lost a dual or traditional format tournament. Gallatin will host South Harrison and Maysville on Thursday and travel to Albany next Tuesday.
Gallatin’s team score of 398 easily beat Maysville’s total of 424. Lawson and Hamilton tied for third with scores of 443.
“Our consistency was the deciding factor as Maysville put up three good scores, but posted a 126 for their fourth score,” said GHS girls golf coach Chris Elbert. “The girls played pretty well at both Plattsburg and Gallatin tournaments,” he added. “Maria Burge continues to show significant improvement as the season progresses.”
Burge shot a 93 to top all individual golfers in the tournament. Maysville’s Kelsey Vaughn finished second with a 97 and teammate Amanda Farmer grabbed third with a round of 100. Gallatin’s Whitney Boyd was fourth, also with a score of 100. Fifth place fell to Lawson’s Val Swope with a 101. Maysville’s Abby Gaiser placed sixth with a 101.
Other individual scores for GHS golfers were: Taylor Henderson 102, Emily Gay 103 and Melanie Jones 109.
2nd at Plattsburg
The Lady Bulldogs outshot 6 large-school squads last Saturday to take a runnerup finish in the Clinton County Invitational in Plattsburg. Platte County golfers totaled 290 to win the competition. Gallatin’s girls shot a team total 294 to finish well ahead of 3rd place Kearney (307).
Under the tournament’s format, one team’s golfer plays her own shot, 2 girls play the best ball and 2 girls play the best shot.
Emily Gay and Maria Burge teamed up to win the best ball competition for Gallatin by beating Platte County’s duo of Tanck and Tanck on a card off. Both teams shot 95. Taylor Henderson and Danielle Critten teamed to finish 3rd in the best shot competition. Their total of 95 was only 2 shots off the winning total. Whitney Boyd shot a round of 104 to finish 3rd in the individual medalist race behind competitors from Platte County (102) and Kearney (98).
“Even though we fell a little short of first, we were pleased with our second place finish as a team,” said Coach Elbert. “I was especially pleased to see all the girls medal,” he added. “Whitney Boyd bounced back from her worst nine holes of the year on the first round with her best nine on the back. Emily and Maria teamed up to win best ball and Taylor and Danielle scored well in the best shot format.”
