The impending war with Iraq is doubly difficult for Rosana Reeds of Gallatin. Both her son and husband will be leaving soon to join the war effort.

Her son, Alex King, a 2002 graduate of Gallatin High School, was studying at MWSC in St. Joseph, majoring in psychology. He left last Saturday for Iowa. From there he will travel to Fort Leonard Wood and expects to be in Kuwait by the end of the month. A fueller, he will provide support from the rear lines and is expected to be overseas for eight months to a year.

Alex received the highest score possible in physical training and was one of only 65 out of 256 soldiers chosen for the 842nd Quarter Master Company, Kansas City, Kan., APFT Superstars 5/03. Out of 296 soldiers, Alex was the only one to have received a maximum score, which no one has topped since then. Alex earned the position of leader in his unit.

Rosana said the Army has been a good experience for Alex. “He has learned respect and pride,” she said. “He’s small in size, but as a soldier he was the biggest of all.”

Rosana’s husband, Curtis Reeds, is a staff sergeant with MOS 19 Kilo (tanks). He may be traveling to Kuwait in May because of his essential position. Curtis, an experienced soldier having fought in Saudi Arabia, will be stationed at the front lines if he goes.

“I keep my fingers crossed hoping they don’t have to go,” said Rosana. “But they know what they’re doing. I hope and pray they come back the same way they left.”
