BRAYMER, MO — Tobin Valley School Day helped students of Braymer C-4 School understand firsthand how a one-room schoolhouse operates. The Braymer Historical Society recently hosted the first annual event in the historic schoolhouse which has been relocated from the Tobin Valley Drive west of Braymer to its new location south of the present school on Highway 116. Third and fourth graders participated in this learning experience with teaching programs presented by the C-4 Public Relations Committee and the Chapter Q PEO. Students stepped back in time, literally, by walking to and from the school. Students were assigned “new ages” and divided into different grad levels as would have been the case in a one-room school. The assignment, a T-chart listing the similarities and differences, was completed on the chalkboard. Bill Petty, a longtime resident of Braymer and a former student of a one-room school, showed students how to start a fire in the wood stove. Other senior citizens also shared recollections of their one-room experiences from their youth.
