The Work of the Search Committee

by Pastor Steve Ellison

Every human is created to be in fellowship with the Creator. As I have written elsewhere, God has promised that we can find Him. He has said that we will find Him when we search for Him with all of our heart. God said that we will find Him when we set our heart and soul to do so. Commitment and effort are required. If we

Leaving Jesus Behind

by Pastor Steve Ellison

The gospels record many instances that show that when Jesus wound up in a setting in which He was with a just a few people or maybe just one person, He seized these teachable moments. I doubt if many of them did, but I hope those individuals realized that these were sacred moments. I can see it in the Scripture now, but I doubt very seriously

He Chose You

by Pastor Steve Ellison

In the days when Jesus walked on the earth, many young Jewish boys were hopeful that someday they could become disciples of their favorite rabbi. These young hopeful disciples would spend many, many long hours memorizing whole books of the Old Testament. When they were ready, they would approach the rabbi of their choice hoping to be accepted by the rabbi. If their memory work was

For Those Who Are Not Yet Members

by Pastor Steve Ellison

It seems that it is very easy for believers to become very inwardly focused. I am not speaking about a bent toward contemplative self-examination like mystics would engage in. Because it is what proceeds out of the heart of a man that defiles him, certainly some of that is beneficial. Rather, what I speak of is individual Christians and churches focusing inwardly in the sense that

My Way or the Highway

by Pastor Steve Ellison

You may think “My Way or the Highway” is good leadership strategy but it is not. You may think that it is a sign of strength but it is not. Does the Bible direct us to stand strong, immovable, and uncompromising on every belief that we have? Does the Bible direct us to try to please others, always giving in to others regarding their beliefs? Are

Two Earthquakes

by Pastor Steve Ellison

As I write this on Good Friday, I am reminded of the original Good Friday. Because of what happened to Jesus of Nazareth, one might find it hard to consider the day as being good. In spite of the humiliating and horrifying treatment that Jesus received from men on that day (and the preceding night), one can still find ample reason to call this day good.

Laying Down Our Rights

by Pastor Steve Ellison

These days, we often hear things like, “I know my rights” or “I don’t have to take that” or “You can’t do that to me.” Many people believe that it is a badge of honor, something to be proud of that they stand up for their rights. Many arguments, even fights, occur because we make sure that no one is taking advantage of us.

Jesus, however,

With One Voice

by Pastor Steve Ellison

A lot has been made of the “of one accord” condition of the church in the first century. Some would have called that church the New Testament church. That would be an accurate name, but it is an accurate name for the church of 2013 also. There is no reason to believe that the church should be anything less today. Romans 14 and 15 tell us

Be Not Offended

by Pastor Steve Ellison

My past few articles have dealt with Romans 14 which tells us to refrain from judging others in matters of opinion and preference. The reasons could not be more obvious, clear, and logical. We are not capable nor do we have the authority. No other human belongs to us. Each and every one of them belongs to God. In addition Romans 14 is very explicit about
