Recognizing the Babe in the Manger

by Pastor Steve Ellison

At the time of the first Christmas faithful Jews were looking in anticipation for the promised Messiah, but I imagine most had grown weary and were totally wrapped up in their own lives. After all, it had been about 400 years since they had heard from the Lord. When Jesus came as promised, even those who were faithfully anticipating the Messiah were likely to be looking

The Bread of Christmas

by Pastor Steve Ellison

From Genesis to Micah, Bethlehem appears often on the pages of the Old Testament. We first learn of Bethlehem in Genesis 47 where we are told of the burial of Rachel, Jacob’s beloved wife.

The book of Ruth tells us that Bethlehem is the setting for perhaps the most beautiful love story ever told. That story begins with a touch of irony. The name Bethlehem means

Doubts

by Pastor Steve Ellison

Has your faith ever been weak? Have you wondered if your big mouth said too much? Have you ever felt all alone? Have you ever had doubts? Have you ever felt terribly persecuted? Did you wonder if perhaps it was your fault, that you really deserved what was happening to you? Have you passed through a long, dark valley, even the valley of the shadow of

Unfailing Love From an Unprejudiced Heart

by Pastor Steve Ellison

Who keeps your calendar? Who sets your appointments and reminds you when they are approaching? Some of us keep our own calendars. Some of us have secretaries who do that for us. Others might put events on our calendars without consulting us but ultimately it is up to us if we keep the appointment or not. Granted there might be repercussions if we do not keep

Lost Opportunities

by Pastor Steve Ellison

John chapter four tells us that about 2,000 years ago, a loving Savior took the time to reveal Himself to a despised and rejected woman. As a matter of fact, Jesus revealed Himself to this woman two times. She did not understand or believe the first time. It was only after Jesus revealed her to herself that she understood and believed His claims about Himself.

The Light

by Pastor Steve Ellison

John 3 begins with a night time meeting between Jesus and Nicodemus. We do not know for sure why Nicodemus came at night but I have a guess. I think that it had nothing to do with Nicodemus. I think it was to set up a very important lesson that Jesus desired to teach to his disciples after Nicodemus left.

We are not told explicitly, but

The New Birth

by Pastor Steve Ellison

Early in Jesus’ ministry a very rich and powerful man came to visit Jesus by night. John 3 tells the story. We are not told why Nicodemus came at night so we can only guess. Maybe Nicodemus was afraid of what his fellow Pharisees would say about him consulting with Jesus. Perhaps one or both of them was busy during the day. Maybe this was the

Washing Your Nets

by Pastor Steve Ellison

Maybe you recall seeing these words in your Bible: Sea of Chinnereth, Sea of Chinneroth, Sea of Gennesaret, Sea of Tiberias, or The Lake. These all refer to one and the same place, the Sea of Galilee, which plays a significant role in the Bible, particularly the New Testament.

Many of Jesus’ miracles and teaching took place on or around this bountiful body of water. In

Dealing with Temptation

by Pastor Steve Ellison

Matthew 4 and Luke 4 both record a very interesting confrontation between Jesus (our Advocate) and Satan (our Adversary). These passages tell us that very early in Jesus’ earthly ministry, in fact immediately following His baptism, He faced a series of temptations from Satan himself. However, Mark 1:12 explicitly states that Jesus was sent by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness for that very purpose.
