Letter to the Editor: Elbert’s

Editor’s note: While some rush to do business at the “box stores” and the “Wal-Marts” of this world, others pause to marvel at the values and traditions still evident in our small towns. The following note was recently mailed to Elbert’s Department Store, one of the oldest retail stores in Northwest Missouri, now in its 81st year at Gallatin.

Dear Folks,

We were in your store this past October

Letter to the Editor: About a recent article

I found the “Editor’s note” at the end of THIS ARTICLE (“We said ‘No!’”) published Nov. 14, 2012, of interest.  It appears to only restate the purpose publicly advanced by Americans For Prosperity (AFP). I believe a more balanced editor’s note would have identified AFP as “a conservative political advocacy group founded and largely supported by billionaire brothers David and Charles Koch of Koch Industries.” This political action committee (PAC)

Letter to the Editor: Christmas crosses

Dear Editor:

I read a story several years ago about a town in the United States that did a simple act that resulted in an amazing thing. Their town people were disgusted that they could no longer display their Christmas ornaments on public grounds that reflected the reason the Christmas season was established… the birth of Jesus. Their nativity scenes were restricted to personal properties.

A group of town folk

Letter to the Editor: Business closure

Dear Editor:

It is with great sadness that AL’S FLORAL of Pattonsburg announces that after four years we will be closing our doors on Jan. 15, 2013.

It is very difficult to keep a business operating in a small town, especially as I have been living for almost two years overseas. But the community, from the very beginning, has been incredibly supportive of the store, and for that I will

Letter to the Editor: More on the sheriff

Dear Editor,

As a citizen I want to comment on some of the recent letters you published about the election. Election time comes with a lot of bad talk about every candidate. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

We elect who serves as our sheriff, and we’re quick to criticize their performance. With that in mind, let’s think about why we voted for our sheriff in the first place.

Letter to the Editor: Political e-mails

Dear Editor,

Sometimes, I think that those who do not own a computer are the lucky ones, because perhaps only they have been mercifully spared from the intense barrage of hateful character assassinations that have flooded cyberspace in the form of forwarded e-mails. This is not an insignificant or isolated issue. I’m convinced that many other individuals – including many county officials – have received these emails whether they agree

Letter to the Editor: Gibson replies

In response to THIS LETTER, Attorney Annie Gibson of Gallatin writes:

First of all, I would like to express my appreciation to Darryl Wilkinson and the Gallatin North Missourian for allowing me to address the letter written by Mr. and Mrs. Emerson.

In reviewing my records on this matter, it appears that Mr. and Mrs. Emerson came to my office in August of 2011 regarding forged documents. As my

Letter to the Editor: Prayer and politics

Dear Editor,

Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth, in whom we live and move and have our being, rules in the kingdoms of men (Daniel 4:17). He does indeed have the power to plant and build a nation, and if a nation does not obey His will he has the power to pluck it up and destroy it (Jeremiah 18:6-10, 12:17).

Men pray and sing “God Bless America,” and

Letter to the Editor: About Becerra

Dear Editor,

In last week’s paper there were three letters praising Sheriff Ben Becerra. One from his wife and another from a family friend. We agree that it is only fair to show respect to those we care for.

Although, Sheriff Becerra is not always respectful of those he has sworn to serve. Over a year ago we gave Sheriff Ben Becerra, his deputies and Prosecuting Attorney Annie Gibson TWO
