Letter to the Editor: McDonald Tea Room

Dear Editor,

When I was a young teenager, I heard many times about this wonderful restaurant in Gallatin, Missouri, from my uncle, Walter Payton. He had met Virginia McDonald at a restaurant in downtown Kansas City. He took my grandmother (Alice Payton) and my mother (Esther Payton Walker) with him to dine there, and they raved about it, too. He was given this cookbook, signed by Virginia McDonald, because they

Letter to the Editor: End of the World

Dear Editor,

I waited all day and half the night last Dec. 21, hoping to see the end of the world. When it didn’t, I decided the next best thing was to sign up for your newspaper for another year.

Sincerely,

John Spickard, Trenton

P.S. A day without at least a smile is a day wasted in my book. And I’m a whole 10 years younger than you.

Letter to the Editor: Columnist, Freida Marie Crump

Dear Editor:

I just want to write to say “Blessing to Mrs. Crump.” I have enjoyed her humor but I like her serious side more. I thought the Thanksgiving writing was good. The Salvation Army bell ringing piece and the story about Mary’s Kid Kitchen were sentiment of Christmas. But the Yes, Virginia, message was outstanding and shows the wisdom and empathy Mrs. Crump has for the left-out people of

Letter to the Editor: Carolers bring hope

Dear Editor,

It was such a pleasant surprise to have the entire sixth grade class caroling at my house Monday night. In light of the tragic events that have transpired in the last few days, my sense of hope in the human spirit has been renewed. What a simple way to remind us of the wonderful country we live in by spreading some much needed holiday cheer. Thanks again teachers,

Letter to the Editor: Guns

Dear Editor,

Great News from Sandy Hook?

That can’t happen here… That kind of thing would never happen in my town… I feel so sorry for them…

I’m sure that is what the people of Newtown, Connecticut, thought as wave after wave of senseless GUN violence has occurred across this country and around the world. It was never close to their own town so it couldn’t and wouldn’t personally affect

Letter to the Editor: Jail statistics

Dear Editor:

As Administrator of the Daviess/DeKalb County Regional Jail I would to share some statistics and thought of 2012 with the citizens of both Counties.

If it were not for the regional jail, taxpayers would have paid out in excess of $426,995.00 for Daviess County and $600,103.80 for DeKalb County for housing prisoners at other facilities not including transportation or other expenses.

The total bond payment for the year

Letter to the Editor: More praise for Elbert’s

In response to the recently published letter to Elbert’s:

I agree with the comments about Elbert’s Department Store. I live in Independence and have been in the Kansas City metro for 32 years and still come home to my hometown a few times a year and find Elbert’s a rare find in a small town store. I was just thinking recently what class Elbert’s gives to Gallatin or to

Letter to the Editor: Sewer rate increase for Gallatin

While our congressmen and senators deal with the upcoming “fiscal cliff” on the national level, the City Council is dealing with our own financial issues here at the local level. The Council has spent the last two months preparing the 2013 budget. We have diligently examined each budget line in every department to ensure responsible spending and more importantly ensure the City of Gallatin is being as efficient as possible.

Letter to the Editor: Gallatin Park Board

A comment posted on www.NorthMissourian.com, relating to the news article “Dockery Park board members resign” published online on Nov. 14:

Maybe the requirement to be a “resident” of the City of Gallatin should be revisited. I know that when I expressed interest in serving on the park board, I was denied due to the fact that I don’t reside within the city limits. There are lots of families
