Letter to the Editor: About Altamont

Dear Editor:

The two articles about Altamont were a pleasant surprise and I enjoyed them a lot. I attended grades one through nine at Altamont, tenth at Winston, and my junior and (1946) senior at Gallatin. My sister Lucille was in the last graduating class at Altamont, 1943. My younger sisters, Evelyn and Charlotte, followed along.

Altamont remains dear to me and the recollections and memories expressed by Sharon, Tessa,

Letter to the Editor: Kindness

Dear Editor:

Sometimes, just when you need it, and get bogged down in the daily grind of life, you are reminded how significant a small, kind act can be. My partner and I were conducting an employee meeting Sunday afternoon at Subway. The wind was howling through a piece of loose trim around one of the windows, making an awful noise outside the door as well as inside the lobby.

Letter to the Editor: Public Parking

Dear Editor:

My subject today is public parking spaces around the square in front of private businesses. I returned to my vehicle to find a note attached asking me to park around the corner so their paying customers would have a place to park. This was on Monday when court was in session so parking was at a shortage. May I respectfully remind this business owner that I patronize his

Letter to the Editor: Hedrick Medical Center

Dear Editor:

Now that the holidays have come and gone, I wanted to take this opportunity to share with our neighbors what’s been happening with the construction of the new Hedrick Medical Center, and let you know what is coming next.

In my last update, I spoke about preparation of the ground for the foundation concrete work and steel framing. Now, the facility is really starting to take shape. If

Letter to the Editor: Funding Proposal

To the Editor:

Missouri lawmakers recently have been mulling creating a funding formula for higher education. Because the state spends a significant portion of the budget on higher education — approximately 11% of general revenue — it is imperative to distribute those funds in the most effective manner. We have several concerns about the proposed funding formula.

The proposed formula calls for pegging spending on Missouri institutions to the spending

Letter to the Editor: School Research

Dear Editor:

Hello. I have been doing research for Missouri around 10 years. I am interested in the mascot, school colors of former high schools. In Daviess County there are three I am still researching.

Altamont shows to have closed in 1943 and may be in the Winston School District now. Civil Bend I’m showing closed in 1948 and looks like it would be in the Pattonsburg School District today.

Letter to the Editor: On the News

Dear Editor:

Enjoyed your article on weather. Brings back many memories.

It was either 1955 or 1956 for our first T.V. Small screen black and white with usually one channel. Weather then only covered local, compared to now where each broadcast covers most of the world.

Was not too sophisticated then as I remember having to scoop a partly cloudy forecast.

I remember watching “The Dinah Shore Chevy Show.” One

Letter to the Editor: Success for Senior Center

Dear Editor:

What started out as a call to Brian Teel, a good friend and fellow Lions Club member of my husband Jamie Sweat, turned into the best fundraiser the Pattonsburg Senior Center has ever had. Last Friday, Brian and his wife suggested “why not have a pie raffle” with the fish fry? Brian told us that Danny Dilley, another Pattonsburg local, had been known to volunteer to be auctioneer

Letter to the Editor: Myrlene’s Efforts

Dear Editor,

Every day the American Red Cross relies on the dedicated efforts of volunteer blood drive coordinators to help collect the blood products needed for patients. Myrlene Heldenbrand has stepped up to the challenge, serving the local community as a blood drive coordinator for the First Baptist Church of Gallatin since 2009.

Myrlene works with the Red Cross to plan and host blood drives and recruit blood donors to
