Good Thinking: Wars and Rumors of War

by Dr. Don Kuehle

“Who goes there, in the night, across the storm-swept plain?

We are the ghosts of a valiant war, a million murdered men.

Who goes there, at the dawn, across the sun-swept plain?

We are the hosts of those who swear, it shall not be again!”

— Thomas Curtis Clark

Veterans of valiant wars long-past will remember, and will be remembered, as we observe Veteran’s Day on

Good Thinking: Why Should I Vote?

by Dr. Don Kuehle

In 1792, Election Day was set for the Tuesday following the first Monday in November. November was selected because the harvest was over and winter had not yet begun. Tuesday was chosen because, if Monday has been chosen, some might have had to travel on Sunday/the Sabbath.

“He cast his vote, distrusting all the elected — but not the law.” So said Karl Shapiro.

I don’t

Good Thinking: Autumn Gold

by Dr. Don Kuehle

Fall is here. The trees are dressed in their colorful garb: green and orange and yellow and gold. Fall reminds us that this world is a place of beauty. Fall reminds us of what is most important in life; and of what is not important.January 1848! Gold is discovered at Sutter’s Fort, California! The news

travels back across the country. 1849! The Gold Rush begins! People

Good Thinking: October is a Lady

by Dr. Don Kuehle

October is a beautiful lady. She invites us to visit awhile, to learn from her the secrets of the good life.

“O suns and skies and clouds of June; and flowers of June together.

Ye cannot rival for one hour October’s bright blue weather.” — Helen Hunt Jackson

October reminds us that there is bounteous beauty in the world, if only we would take the time

Good Thinking: Autumn Reverie

by Dr. Don Kuehle

Autumn takes center stage mid the heat of September and exits on cue

in the cold of December. No other season moves from one extreme to the other like autumn. The poets help us see the complexity of autumn.

“Across the pearly distance it lies on hill and stream,

In banks of airy turquoise as softly as a dream.

A slumberous smoke that rises serenely in

Good Thinking: Come to the Fair

by Dr. Don Kuehle

The family was enjoying time together at the county fair. The day was sunny and cool; a perfect day to be a fair-goer. We walked through barns filled with cattle, hogs, horses, sheep and goats, chickens and geese. We marveled at the displays of people’s talents and hard work. We rode the Ferris Wheel and the Merry-Go-Round. We watched people match their wits and skills in

Good Thinking: Grandparents Are Special People

by Dr. Don Kuehle

My wife was off shopping. Normally I would wait for her in the book section. This particular day, however, found me in the card section. There were aisles and aisles of cards; cards for every occasion. One could buy cards for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, retirement, and for new home and old friends. There were cards that expressed a myriad of emotions: “Thinking of You”; “Sorry You’re

Good Thinking: Saturday’s Child

by Dr. Don Kuehle

“Monday’s child is fair of face,

Tuesday’s child is full of grace,

Wednesday’s child is full of woe,

Thursday’s child has far to go,

Friday’s child is loving and giving,

Saturday’s child has to work for a living.”

I don’t recall the day of the week on which I was born; most of us don’t. I do feel, most times, like Saturday’s child; I have to

Good Thinking: Back-to-School Days

by Dr. Don Kuehle

“School days, school day, good old Golden Rule days;

Readin’ and Writin’ and ‘Rithmetic

Taught to the tune of the hickory stick.”

School days have always been important days. Even for those of us who remember the “good old days,” school shaped our lives. We recall when life was less complicated. We attended a one-room school. Discipline was strict; the hickory stick was used by the
