Standardized tests are not intelligence tests. A child is neither brilliant nor stupid based on their individual scores. These tests provide a minimal measure of where our educational system has help our children progress. Shame on the teacher for allowing this child to consider herself "stupid".

Your article may have been heart-felt, but was a disservice to reality. Any use of the test scores for an individual child should as a tool to plan improve in her knowledge.

What a wonderful article! Just a few weeks ago, my son-in-law and I were listening to NPR and heard an interview with a man whose grandparents had been on an Orphan Train, and, though I'd heard of the trains, I'd never pursued learning more.
This article has stirred me to do so.

I agree with the comments about Elberts department store. I live in Independence and have been in the Kansas City metro for 32 years and still come home to my home town
a few times a year and find Elberts a rare find in a small town store, I was just thinking recently what class Elberts gives to Gallatin or to any small town. Freinds here have asked me where I have gotten some merchandise to find they would have to go 70 miles to get the same
I have also sent friends from here to have a tour by
Mr. Daryl Wilkerson of the squirrel cage jail and have been
complientary of the tour and Gallatin

Maybe the requirement to be a "resident" of the City of Gallatin should be revisited. I know that when I expressed interest in serving on the park board, I was denied due to the fact that I don't reside within the city limits. There are lots of families who live outside the city limits whose children participate in activities held there who just might be willing to step up.

Just a thought.

I'm certainly not the smartest and probably the least educated person to leave a comment. However, over the last twenty - thirty years seem to me people have come to think they can rely on the govenment to take care of them. This happens all the way from the govenment in Washington D.C. down to our little City govenment. I always thought the government was to insure you had an equal opportunity to take care of yourself. With the govenment now involved in just about every facet of your life, what used be a "common courtesy" has become stepping on someones toes. Bottom line, if you have a business and a bill does not get paid, fire the bookkeeper.
