Pity our poor National Anthem. As it celebrates its 200th birthday this year the song has been much maligned as “unsingable,” “war like,” and simply old-fashioned. The fellow who penned it after watching the bombardment of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812 meant it to be nothing more than a poem. He never intended for someone to set it to a piece
