Outshining All the Other Moons

August’s full moon — called a supermoon because it occurs when the moon is closest to Earth in its orbit — occurred on Aug. 10 and wowed local skywatchers, including Cindy Barker of Altamont, to focus heavenward in order to catch the spectacular sight. The technical name is the perigee-syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system. The next and closest supermoon of 2014 will be on September 9.
