Orphan trains echo through memories, time

When Evelyn Trickel hears the sound of a train whistle in the early hours of the morning, she thinks of the lost and abandoned children who rode the Orphan Trains years ago.

“They were children looking for a home and a family,” she said. “I wonder how they must have felt as the train pulled into a town.”

    What a wonderful article! Just a few weeks ago, my son-in-law and I were listening to NPR and heard an interview with a man whose grandparents had been on an Orphan Train, and, though I’d heard of the trains, I’d never pursued learning more.
    This article has stirred me to do so.
