Polo woman sentenced for $414,000 bank theft

Beth Phillips, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a Polo, Mo., woman was sentenced in federal court today for embezzling more than $414,000 from Bank Northwest, where she was employed in Polo and Hamilton.

Laurine K. Calvert, 56, of Polo, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays to 23 months in federal prison without parole. The court also ordered Calvert to pay restitution to

At least for now, Daviess County bears expense of civil case in DeKalb County

The expenses for a change of venue civil case in DeKalb County will be paid by Daviess County, where the case originated, until the final outcome of the case. As a change of venue civil case, the originating county is responsible for the court costs.

The Daviess County Commission recently received a response from Jon Beetem, the circuit judge assigned to the case, about the court costs for the case.

Frances Palmer 1939-2011

Memorial services for Frances Palmer will be held at Leavenworth National Cemetery at a later date. Cremation was under the direction of Bram-Turner Funeral Home, Maysville.

Frances Ann Palmer, 71, died March 22, 2011 at Kansas University Medical Center.

Arlene Tuggle 1918-2011

Funeral services for Arlene Tuggle were held Saturday, March 26, at Ridgeway Methodist Church. Arrangements were by Polley Funeral Home, Excelsior Springs. The family suggests donations to Ridgeway Cemetery.

Arlene Tuggle, 92, died at John Knox Village in Higginsville on March 21, 2011.

She was born to W.F. and May Campbell of Ridgeway, on Dec. 9, 1918. Arlene attended school at Ridgeway, graduating in 1936. She graduated from Northwest Missouri

Marion Janet "May" (Swan) Clemens Baker, 98 of Albany and a former resident of St. Joseph, passed away, Saturday, March 26, 2011 at a Cameron hospital.

May, the daughter of William and Margaret (Gibson) Swan was born March 1, 1913 in Ladner British Columbia, Canada. She came to the United States at the age of 10 months. On Feb. 18, 1975, May became a United States citizen.

Public meeting on feral hogs in Caldwell county

A public meeting on feral hogs and what citizens can do to help will be held at 6 p.m. on April 5 at the Caldwell County Courthouse in Kingston.

Feral hogs have been a serious concern for some time in the southern part of Missouri and now it seems they are causing problems in parts of Caldwell County. These populations of feral hogs can quickly become established through intentional releases
