North Daviess renews superintendent’s contract

The contract for Superintendent Becky Morris was extended through the 2012 school year at the current salary after the North Daviess R-3 Board of Education returned to open session from a closed meeting on Jan. 18.

In other business, the financial statement was presented by Mrs. Morris. The bills were paid as presented.

Jessica Nelson and Cecil McCrary had signed up for the school board election as of Jan. 18.

Ella Smith 1929-2010

Ella Smith, 81, of Gallatin, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010 at the Cameron Nursing & Rehab Center. Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at McWilliams Funeral Home in Gallatin. Burial was at the Miriam Cemetery in Bethany.

Ella was born Jan. 6, 1929 in rural Daviess County, Missouri to Clair and Beulah (Alder) Miller. She graduated from Coffey High School in 1946. After graduation, Ella attended

Kenneth W. Fales 1947-2010

Kenneth W. (Kenny) Fales, 62, passed away Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010 at his home. Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27 at the First Christian Church in Gallatin. Family visitation was held on Tuesday evening at the church. Burial was at the Lake Viking Cemetery near Gallatin. Gallatin Theatre League auditions and meeting this Sunday

The Gallatin Theatre League will hold a full membership meeting at Courter Theater, Gallatin, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31.

All current members and prospective members are encouraged to attend. Items on the agenda include the election of board officers and members, the status of ongoing stage-floor renovations, plans for future renovations and repairs, and discussion of setting the productions and events for this year.

SWCD state cost-share sign up begins Feb. 1

Daviess County Soil and Water Conservation District state cost-share sign up begins Monday, Feb. 1 though Feb. 26.

This is a one time sign up for the cost-share year. Funds will become available after July 1, 2010, and continues through June 30, 2011. Practices that landowners may be interested in applying for are: Terrace Systems, Terrace Systems with Tile, Water Impoundment Reservoirs, Sediment Retention Control Structures, Sod Waterways, Diversions, Pasture

Grand River Tech students earn scholarships

Grand River Technical School, Chillicothe, has announced its annual post-secondary student scholarships for the 2009-2010 school year.

The criteria for selection included exemplary attendance, work habits and attitude, and competencies or grades earned.

Recipients from our area are Derrick Sprague of Jamesport, diesel equipment technology, for the Don Ward Memorial Scholarship ($250) and the GRTS Directors Scholarship ($1,000); Jonathan Garlick of Gallatin, collision technology, for the Robert and Helen Smith
