Carl and Barbara Landes celebrate 50th wedding anniversary

Carl E. "Gene" Landes of Jameson and Barbara Jeane (Frost) of Gallatin were married June 3, 1959.

Their children are Cindy Robinson and husband, Newton, Jr., Woodbridge, Va.; Donna Corbin and husband, Mitchell, and Janet Killin, all of Mound City. They have seven grandchildren, Kent Barnett; Larry Farr and wife, Shawna; April Barnett; Newton Robinson; Kathy Robinson; Chelsea Killin; Kimberly Corbin; and one great-grandchild is expected this year. Franklin Archer catches 22 pound flathead

Franklin Archer of Gallatin caught this 22 pound flathead out of the Kansas River in the Kansas City area Thursday night, May 14. Franklin said he hired "Captain Catfish" to take him out in his boat. He also caught four channel cat and one drum on cut bait.

Gallatin Girl Scouts travel to Great Wolf Lodge

Members of Troop #8057, along with leader Laurie Walton-Roll, co-leader Clara Maize, and mother Julie Burnett, made a trip to Kansas on May 8 for a night of swimming fun at the Great Wolf Lodge.

Corn stands and planting progress

There are many fields with excellent corn stands. Now is the time to measure populations to determine your current stand population and compare this to your seeding rate. This will help you determine your population currently and begin watching for any additional stand loss.

Growers should be on the watch for soil insects. Several fields that I was in last week had increased white grub

Foster Welty

 1930 – 2009

Foster Welty, 78, Coffey, died Sunday, May 17, 2009.

He was born July 11, 1930 in St. Joseph, Mo., the son of August C. and Sarah (Foster) Welty.

On March 1, 1982, he married Ermagene Boulting in Pattonsburg, Mo. She survives at the home.

Foster was a retired farmer. He had worked for the Missouri Department of Transportation. He served with the Army during the Korean Conflict.

Marion Pugh

Graveside services for Marion Pugh were held Saturday, May 16, at the Grand River Cemetery near Jameson. Arrangements were by McWilliams Funeral Home in Gallatin. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grand River Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

Marion Pugh, 80, died May 13, 2009, at his home in Altamont.

Dorothy Richardson

Funeral services for Dorothy Richardson were held Sunday at Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory, St. Joseph. Interment was at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family suggests memorial gifts to the Cross Roads Hospice, Kansas City, Mo.

Dorothy M. Richardson, 71, Clarksdale, died Thursday, May 14, 2009.
Mrs. Richardson was born Dec. 19, 1937, in Pattonsburg, the daughter of Everett and Stella Williams.
She married Daniel Ralph Richardson on June 4, 1990.

Dixie Youngs

Funeral services for Dixie Youngs were held Saturday at Poland-Thompson Chapel in Cameron. Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery, Gallatin. Arrangements were by Poland-Thompson Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Cameron Regional Medical Center Foundation.
