Post Scripts: Wars end – but the battle for freedom never ends

It was in May, 1868, that General John Logan issued the first Memorial Day proclamation. It read: "Let not the ravages of time to coming generations testify that we have forgotten, as a people, the cost of a free and undivided Republic." He designated May 30 as the day to observe Memorial Day.
