Amish farmers turn to new, hopefully profitable venture — deer farms

Laverne Beechy and seven other Amish farmers are raising a new type of livestock on their land around Jamesport — deer.

The first of the deer farms was started in 1996, but Laverne didn’t begin raising his own deer until 2001. He started it as a hobby.

"A hobby that will hopefully make some money," he said.

Local merchants reward GHS students for seat belt usage

In conjunction with the recent "Battle of the Belt" campaign at GHS, the Gallatin Police Department rewarded student drivers who were found to be wearing their seat belts.

Births – Makaila Lynn Kennedy

Blaine and Heather Kennedy of St. Joseph announce the arrival of their daughter.

Makaila was born at 11:27 p.m. on October 11, 2008. She weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces, and was 20 inches long.

Maternal grandmother is Denise Everman of Gallatin. Paternal grandparents are John and Linda Kennedy of St. Joseph.

Gallatin FFA sends two to districts

On November 5 the Area 2 FFA Association held its qualifying event for the fall speaking contest at the Gallatin High School.

Piburn to perform in All-District Concert

Winston band student Tabitha Piburn was selected for 7th chair clarinet in the All-District Concert band.

Auditions were held Saturday, Nov. 1, at Central High School in St. Joseph. Rehearsals will be held on December 13 at Platte City High School, with the concert to follow in the evening. Winston band instructor is Ann Wood.
