Winston FFA Goes to the Royal

On Oct. 17, the Winston FFA Chapter went to the American Royal in Kansas City to help with the many workshops that were presented to elementary students of local Kansas City schools.

The chapter made presentations to the students about various facets of agriculture and energy. Some of the stations included were Rodeo University, World of Energy, World of Ag, Working Dog Demonstrations, and a Horse Training

Youtsey, Rains are American FFA degree recipients

Laura Youtsey and Riley Rains, 2007 graduates of Gallatin R-5, recently received the American FFA Degree.

Earning the degree means Laura and Riley are two of a select group of individuals to be recognized for years of academic and professional excellence. The honor was presented on Oct. 25, 2008 at the 81st National FFA Convention, held in Indianapolis, Ind.

Dr. Humphrey Family Dentistry at 302 S. Main in Gallatin is offering a reward of $1 in exchange for every pound of candy children bring in after Halloween.

He’ll throw in a free toothbrush to sweeten the pot. Dr. Humphrey will be trading cash for candy from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 1, and from 3-5 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, Nov. 3-6.

Pattonsburg Baby Show Halloween costume contest

Pattonsburg’s Antique Car, Tractor and Engine Show was held Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 4-5. The following are the results of the baby show’s Halloween costume contest with winners listed, followed by parents and hometown. Winners of the baby show will be in next week’s paper.

Daviess County Courthouse News (10-29-08)

County Clerk

The County Clerk’s office will be open 8 a.m.- noon on Saturday for absentee balloting.

County Commission

James Lewis, bridge supervisor, met with the commission reporting that they have completed the bridge in Jackson Township and it is now open for traffic.

Bills were audited and paid.

Bob Burnett, Snyder and Associates, met with the commission and John Quinn, landowner, concerning BRO project 31 in Grand River Township.

Gallatin R-5 seeks help with cost of life saving defibrillators

Recently the Gallatin R-5 School District purchased two automated external defibrillators, one to be placed in the elementary gym and one in the high school gym.

These will be available at athletic events and other gatherings held at the school. Research shows that quick response to heart attacks can be lifesaving for both the young and old.

R-5 band seeks names of past band directors 1943-49

The Gallatin R-5 band has been working on a past director list in preparation for the band’s MMEA performance in January.

A good start has been made through yearbooks and information gathered courtesy of Bob Paul and Bob Aulgur.

Still, the band has been unable to secure the names of the band directors during the school years of 1943-1944; 1944-1945; 1945-1946; 1946-1947; 1947-1948 and 1948-1949.

City to replace pumps at sewer station; old water tower ready to come down

Plant Manager Steve Reid discussed the sewer lift station on South Prospect going down with the Gallatin Board of Aldermen during their regular meeting held Monday, Oct. 27, at city hall.

Mr. Reid said the pumps and electrical system will need to be replaced. The city currently has a rental pump in the station until the repairs can be made.
