NW Vipers get baseball season underway

The 9 and under Northwest Vipers were back in action last weekend at the Spring Shootout at Tiffany Hills Sports Complex, though they won only one game and lost two in heartbreaking fashion.

8 and Under Vipers open summer season

The Northwest Vipers 8 & under machine pitch baseball team started the 2008 campaign with a 2-1 showing in the Golden Glove Tournament held April 27-28 in Liberty.

The team is made up of boys from Conception, Gallatin, Maryville, Stanberry, St. Joseph and Winston, and is coached by Rob Dowis of Conception, Eric Lewis and BillWalker.

GHS sweeps track invite at Graceland; Boys 400meter relay team breaks school record at Stanberry

Gallatin varsity track squads hit their strides last Thursday with first place sweeps in team standings at the Newtown-Harris Invitational held at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa.

The Lady Bulldogs amassed 154 ½ points to easily outdistance Princeton (73), while the Bulldog boys piled up 139 ½ points to knock off runnerup Princeton (102).

Bulldog athletes saluted on National Student Athlete Day

For the 10th consecutive year, Gallatin R-5 has participated in National Student Athlete Day.

The day  is set aside April 6 to recognize and honor student athletes around the nation for their achievements in academics and athletics. These athletes are also recognized for their sportsmanship and contributions to school and community.

Derrick McBroom moves on to Class 1 state golf tourney

Gallatin’s Derrick McBroom placed seventh overall in Monday’s Class 1 district golf tournament held in Richmond, and will advance to the state tournament for the second straight year.

McBroom, who shot a 92 to finish in a three-way tie, led the Bulldog contingent that finished fifth overall in team standings.

Gallatin R-5 presented budget update

Superintendent James Ruse presented a budget update for the 2008-2009 school year to the Gallatin R-5 Board of Education during their regular meeting held April 16. The initial budget was balanced, but Mr. Ruse expects a deficit budget for the new year.

North Daviess R-3 offers three contracts, considers buying bus

The North Daviess Board of Education offered a contract to Jack Bains for high school math; David Michael for middle school math; and Angel Michael for 7-12 grade science upon returning to open session after a closed meeting of the North Daviess Board of Education held Monday, April 14.
