Even before rains canceled Tuesday’s softball game against Milan, Gallatin R-5 coach Jeremy Hobbs only had four or five starting positions nailed down for what was to be the season and home opener for the Lady Bulldogs.
“Some of our returning starters have been busy at the state fair and didn’t have enough practices, so I was going to have to mix and match for that first game,” he advised, while rain continued to fall Tuesday morning.
Weather permitting, Gallatin’s new season opener will be on the road tomorrow (Thursday) at Smithville, but heavy rains continued to fall across the region through Wednesday. The home opener with Milan has been rescheduled for Monday at 5 p.m.
Coach Hobbs has his pitcher/catcher battery set. Senior Lindsey Robertson and freshman Lacey Dixon will share pitching duties, with senior Kelsie Parker at her familiar spot behind the plate. Robertson will likely play shortstop when she isn’t on the mound. Dixon will be in centerfield on her off days.
Sophomore Alyssa Strein is the leading candidate at third base. Returning starters Trisha Sprague, Katie Jarboe and Brittney Hixson will also be on the field, Hobbs said.
The Lady Bulldogs are scheduled to play in the Albany Tournament this Saturday but the weekend forecast is calling for additional showers on Friday and Saturday. They will open Grand River Conference play next Tuesday at Maysville.
