Contested elections on the ballot in April, include two races for mayor:

J.L. Eckelberry and David Bequette in Jamesport and Mark (Bubba) Smith and Patrick McDonald in Pattonsburg..

In Township elections Grand River, Jackson and Marion will vote yes or no to renew the tax levy of 35 cents on the hundred dollars valuation, for a period of four years. Colfax tax levy

Winston board offers contract renewal to Supt. Burns

The Winston R-6 Board of Education offered a superintendent’s contract to Wendell Burns during their regular meeting held Jan. 16.

Darlene Conover was hired as elementary special education instructor for the 2003-04 school year and the resignation of Mrs. York was accepted, effective at the end of this school year.

The board was notified of the completion of ceiling repair to the art room.

State cost-share sign-up throughout February

Daviess County Soil & Water Conservation District FY-2004 Cost-Share sign-up is throughout the month of February. Beginning Monday, Feb. 3, landowners wishing to receive state cost-share funds after July 1, 2003, may apply for assistance.

Absentee landowners wanting to apply for cost-shared practices may fill out a signature authorization form prior to the sign-up date. This form will remain on file with the soil district until the landowner cancels this

Change of venue pending for Paulno’s murder trial

The following cases were heard by Judge Warren McElwain on Law Day held Jan. 22:

In State of Missouri vs. Lori Paulno, held for charges of 1st degree murder, Class A felony, abandonment of a corpse, Class D felony, and stealing, Class C felony, the case was transferred to Judge Stephen K. Griffin. A change of venue is pending.

Sheriff’s Dept.

Jeffrey C. Mathews, 23, Pattonsburg, was charged Jan. 25 with attempting to produce methamphetamine, Class B felony. He is being held at Ray County Security Housing with bond set at $50,000.

Mathews was arrested during a traffic stop by the Sheriff’s Department on a misdemeanor warrant from the Higginsville Police Department. A search of the vehicle revealed items which are used in the production of methamphetamine.

County Commission

Daviess County

James Lewis, bridge supervisor, met with the commission reporting that three dry hydrants will be installed within the boundaries of the Gallatin Fire Protection District.

David Holcomb moved to appoint Roy Pendleton to the Green Hills Regional Planning commission board as the Daviess County citizen representative. Danny Heldenbrand seconded. Carried.
