A wild timber wolf was killed by landowner on mistaken identity

North of Trenton in Grundy County

A wild timber wolf — a member of a species long ago considered extinct in Missouri — was killed Tuesday evening, Oct. 23, in a rural area of Grundy County, north of Trenton. An archery hunter, who prefers to remain anonymous, returning home from his deer stand saw what he considered to be a “big coyote looking into his sheep lot.” With the dog-like

Charitable deduction needed now more than ever

Capital Eye by Randi Bjornstad

Capital Eye by Randi Bjornstad

If there’s one thing people in this country can feel proud about, not only in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks but also following any kind of tragedy you can name, it’s the response — from tears and hugs to clothing, food and money — that comes pouring forth to help anyone less fortunate than themselves.

by Darryl Wilkinson

by Darryl Wilkinson

You might be surprised at what a professor of folklore reported. He studied folklore in Romania while on a Fulbright fellowship. He says people in Eastern

Family Daze: A Halloween Angel

by Debbie Farmer

Halloween is the scariest holiday of the year, especially at my house. I live in sheer terror, from the first week of October, of my young daughter asking for a homemade costume. Ghosts, ghouls, and goblins don’t strike fear into my heart as much as the electric torture device known as "The Sewing Machine".

The last time I saw mine, it was holding up the back end

Family Daze: Making the Cut

by Debbie Farmer

This Halloween my five-year old son insisted on having a dinosaur carved onto the side of his pumpkin. Now maybe it’s me, but I’ve noticed that pumpkin carving sure isn’t what it used to be. Only a few years ago a respectable Jack O’ Lantern had two triangle eyes, a tiny triangle nose, and a jaunty crescent mouth with a crooked tooth. The only complicated part was

Post Scripts: Patience wearing thin

by Joe Snyder

Imagine that while we are preparing to avenge the Afghanistan terrorists for their recent attacks on the U.S., China decides to attack Taiwan, or North Korea begins an assault on South Korea. Two wars at once; that’s the Pentagon’s "two-war" notion around which we have been developing for a decade. This concept was developed by V.P. Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Colin Powell when they ran

* You know you’re getting older when you can remember when Russia was America’s mortal enemy, and you’re approaching senility if you can still recall when it was Germany.
