Irridation gets glowing comments

In late February, Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman announced the government will allow irradiation of raw meat and raw meat products in an effort to reduce contamination with microorganisms and improve food safety. The 60-day comment period is past, placing Secretary Glickman’s proposed irradiation rule officially into effect.

Explosion at Jamesport

A 75-year-old man may have died as the result of an explosion at his Jamesport home late last Thursday afternoon, authorities said. The blast apparently was set off when the victim, Lemuel Woltje, attempted to light the furnace. He was taken to the KU Medical Center burn center where he died on Sunday. His wife suffered injuries in the incident.
